Giorgia Meloni at the UN: Update on the day

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made a 13-minute speech at the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing Italy’s support for Kiev and the international community’s duty to “not look the other way.” Following the speech, she attended a dinner with her staff before quickly flying back to Rome. Meloni decided to cut short her trip to the United Nations General Assembly by one day, missing out on a summit on Ukraine organized by Joe Biden with Volodymyr Zelensky in attendance. She will participate remotely from Rome and skip the traditional reception at the Metropolitan Museum hosted by the US President as she did last year.

Meloni faced questions from reporters about a possible shift in Italy’s support for Kiev due to her absence at the Ukraine summit. She firmly denied any change in Italy’s position, reiterating Italy’s strong support for Ukraine during her meeting with Zelensky. She criticized attempts to create a false narrative and emphasized Italy’s reputation for clarity and determination in supporting Ukraine. Meloni highlighted the importance of maintaining a consistent stance and not changing positions like the wind for the sake of Italy’s credibility on the international stage.

Italy reaffirmed its support for Ukraine at both the General Assembly and the Security Council, where Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani spoke on Meloni’s behalf. Despite persistent questions from journalists, Meloni remained composed and stated that she did not meet with former President Donald Trump or his staff during her visit to New York. She stayed focused on Italy’s consistent support for Ukraine and the need for clarity and determination in foreign policy decisions to uphold the country’s reputation as a reliable and serious actor on the global stage.

Meloni’s decision to shorten her trip to the United Nations General Assembly sparked speculation about Italy’s stance on Ukraine, with concerns raised about a potential policy shift. She, however, dismissed such rumors and stressed the importance of maintaining a steadfast position in support of Ukraine. By participating in key meetings remotely and addressing questions from journalists, Meloni sought to clarify Italy’s unwavering commitment to supporting Kiev and uphold the country’s reputation as a reliable and consistent partner in international affairs.

Despite skipping important events at the United Nations General Assembly, such as the reception at the Metropolitan Museum, Meloni remained focused on Italy’s strategic interests and foreign policy objectives. By reiterating Italy’s support for Ukraine and addressing questions about her absence at key summits, she aimed to dispel any doubts about Italy’s commitment to its allies and its clear stance on international issues. Meloni’s firm stance and her delegation’s active participation at various meetings underscored Italy’s ongoing engagement in global affairs and its determination to uphold its principles and values on the international stage.
