Son of Phillies owner’s second abandoned Hollywood Hills mansion taken over by squatters

A multimillion-dollar abandoned mansion located in the Hollywood Hills has been taken over by squatters, becoming an eyesore for residents in the neighborhood. Neighbors reported that the home had been vacant for several years and had become a safety hazard, attracting crime to the area. This is the second property in the Hollywood Hills that has been taken over by squatters, with the first mansion on Sunset Boulevard being destroyed by taggers who covered the walls and windows with graffiti.

The abandoned mansion at the corner of Multiview and Mulholland has become a magnet for crime, with squatters coming and going despite police intervention. One neighbor shared that squatters had attacked a fellow neighbor with steel rebar and a beer bottle, highlighting the danger and lawlessness surrounding the property. Both homes in question are owned by John Powers Middleton, a film producer and son of the Philadelphia Phillies owner John S. Middleton. Middleton is best known for his work on films such as “Oldboy” and “Manchester by the Sea.”

L.A. City Councilwoman Nithya Raman stated that they are closely monitoring both homes and working with the Los Angeles Police Department to address the issues within the properties. Raman emphasized that the properties are in egregious violation of the law and that action is being taken to ensure the safety of the neighborhood and surrounding community. The city has elevated the issue with the Department of Building and Safety to enforce security measures and hold the property owner accountable.

The Los Angeles Police Department has taken steps to address the situation, escorting people out of the house on Mulholland and installing security guards to monitor the property. Additionally, a chain link fence has been added to prevent further trespassing. Raman stressed that the issue is being taken seriously as a public safety concern with consequences for neighbors and the community. Property owners are being urged to take responsibility for their properties or face action from the city to combat the squatter problem and maintain safety in the area.

The abandoned mansion on Mulholland Drive and another property on Sunset Plaza Drive are both owned by John Powers Middleton, who has been uncooperative in addressing the issue of squatters taking over his properties. The situation has escalated to the point where squatters are engaging in criminal activity, posing a threat to residents and the neighborhood. Law enforcement and city officials are working together to ensure that security measures are implemented promptly to prevent further incidents and maintain the safety and integrity of the community.

The actions of squatters occupying abandoned mansions in the Hollywood Hills have raised concerns among residents and city officials about the safety and security of the neighborhood. The response from law enforcement and local government indicates a strong commitment to addressing the issue and holding property owners accountable for maintaining their properties. Steps are being taken to prevent further trespassing and criminal activity, with a focus on ensuring the well-being of residents and the community as a whole.
