After more than four decades, Macao’s horse racing track held its final races on Saturday, marking the end of the sport in the city known for its giant casinos. The decision to terminate the contract with the Macao Jockey Club was made in response to operational challenges cited by the Macao Horse Race Company. Despite being only half full, gamblers gathered in the stands to place their last bets, with some tourists also visiting for the occasion.

Mai Wan-zun, a student from mainland China studying in Macao, expressed her desire to experience the unique atmosphere of horse racing in Macao, which is not available in mainland China. Meanwhile, Helena Chong, a local resident, made her first and final visit to the racecourse, lamenting the end of the gambling and entertainment provided by horse racing. The industry in Macao has faced economic difficulties in recent years, exacerbated by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, with reported operating losses of over $311 million.

Under the termination agreement, the horse racing company committed to arranging the transportation of owners’ horses to other locations by March 2025 and handling its employees in accordance with the law. In contrast, Hong Kong continues to have a thriving horse racing scene, with its jockey club successfully running various gambling activities and supporting numerous charitable causes. The closure of Macao’s horse racing track marks the end of an era for the city’s sport and entertainment landscape.

The Macao Jockey Club’s final races were met with a mix of emotions from visitors, who witnessed the end of an era in the city’s sporting history. Despite the challenges faced by the horse racing industry in Macao, the closure of the track represents a significant loss for both locals and tourists who enjoyed the excitement and thrill of horse racing. The shift of focus from horse racing to other forms of entertainment, such as casino gambling, reflects the evolving preferences and priorities of the city’s residents and visitors.

As the final races unfolded at the Macao Jockey Club, jockeys competed in a bittersweet atmosphere, knowing that it was the end of an era for horse racing in the city. The abandoned tribunes and empty stands served as a poignant reminder of the track’s closure, as visitors collected their winnings and bid farewell to a beloved pastime. While Hong Kong’s horse racing industry continues to thrive, Macao’s track closure marks the end of a chapter in the city’s sporting history, leaving behind memories of excitement, competition, and camaraderie among racing enthusiasts.
