The Liberty, led by All-Star guard Sabrina Ionescu and coach Sandy Brondello, had a feisty and physical scrimmage with their all-male practice squad at Barclays Center in preparation for their postseason opener against Atlanta. The team had been focused on earning the No. 1 seed throughout the season, especially after falling short in the WNBA Finals the previous year. Despite the disappointment of last season, the Liberty were determined to secure their first title as the only original franchise in the league that had not yet won a championship. Their 32-8 record ensured them home-court advantage throughout the postseason, including the first two games in Brooklyn against Atlanta.

The Dream, who finished the regular season with a 15-25 record, ended the season with a win at Barclays, although the Liberty rested some key players, including All-Star forward Breanna Stewart, in the second half. Coach Brondello emphasized the importance of not getting too comfortable at the top and remaining focused, as any team can be a threat in the playoffs. The Liberty’s experience from last year’s close call in the first round against Washington served as a reminder of the competitive nature of the postseason. The team used the regular-season finale as motivation to stay sharp and avoid any lapses in the playoffs.

As they prepared for their first-round matchup against Atlanta, the Liberty engaged in a rigorous practice session that included facing off against their all-male practice squad. The intensity of the practice was elevated in order to simulate the level of competition they would face in the postseason. Ionescu expressed excitement about the challenge ahead and acknowledged the danger of facing a team like Atlanta, who had nothing to lose. The team understood the importance of not underestimating any opponent, regardless of their seeding, as evidenced by their hard-fought victory over Washington in last year’s first round.

Breanna Stewart, a two-time WNBA champion with the Seattle Storm and the 2023 league MVP in her first season with the Liberty, reflected on the team’s goals and the significance of clinching the No. 1 seed. Stewart highlighted the importance of winning at home and the support of the home crowd in their pursuit of a championship. She emphasized the excitement of playoff basketball and the opportunity to create new memories with her teammates. The Liberty were determined to make the most of their postseason run and to build on their successes from the regular season.

With their sights set on a deep playoff run and their eyes on the ultimate prize of a championship, the Liberty entered the postseason with a sense of determination and focus. Coach Brondello and the players understood the challenges that lay ahead and the level of competition they would face. They were prepared to give their all in pursuit of the elusive first title for the franchise. The team’s experience from last year’s postseason, combined with their determination and drive, set the stage for an exciting and competitive playoff series against Atlanta and beyond. As they geared up for their first-round matchup, the Liberty were ready to showcase their talents and make a statement in the quest for WNBA glory.
