The Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Criminal Investigation Division and Coast Guard Investigative Services, boarded a vessel named Maersk Saltoro, which is managed by the same companies responsible for the cargo ship that caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The FBI stated that they are conducting court authorized law enforcement activity on board the vessel, but did not provide further details. The owner of the vessel, Grace Ocean Private Limited, and its operator, Synergy Marine Group, have not yet responded to requests for comment. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland and the U.S. Coast Guard have also been contacted for comment.

The cargo ship involved in the incident, named the Dali, struck a support pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, causing it to collapse. The Dali is owned and managed by the same companies responsible for the Maersk Saltoro, both based in Singapore. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the Dali experienced two power losses in the minutes leading up to the collision with the bridge, leaving it unable to steer away from the pier. Tragically, six construction workers lost their lives when the bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River.

A lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department alleges that Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Group were negligent in their maintenance of the Dali, specifically in ignoring electrical problems that may have contributed to the bridge collapse. The details of the lawsuit suggest that the companies may have cut corners in their maintenance practices, resulting in a catastrophic failure that led to loss of life. It is important to note that this is a developing story and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

The involvement of federal law enforcement agencies in the investigation of the Maersk Saltoro raises questions about the potential criminal implications of the bridge collapse. The FBI’s presence on the vessel suggests that there may be suspicions of foul play or criminal negligence on the part of the companies involved in the management of the cargo ships. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Coast Guard Investigative Services are also taking part in the investigation, indicating a multi-agency effort to uncover the truth behind the tragic incident.

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge has had far-reaching consequences, not only resulting in loss of life but also leading to legal repercussions for the companies responsible. The lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department seeks to hold Grace Ocean Private Limited and Synergy Marine Group accountable for their alleged negligence in maintaining the Dali. As the investigation unfolds, it is likely that more details will emerge about the events leading up to the bridge collapse and the actions of the companies involved.

The tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper maintenance and oversight in the shipping industry. The incident has highlighted the potential dangers of cutting corners and ignoring warning signs in the maintenance of cargo ships, which can have devastating consequences. The involvement of federal law enforcement agencies underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for a thorough investigation to determine the causes of the bridge collapse. As the investigation continues, it is essential that the responsible parties are held accountable for their actions to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
