Elon Musk Officially Relocates X to Texas

X has quietly relocated its official headquarters to a rural community just outside of Austin, Texas, according to recent court filings. Elon Musk’s lawyers have requested a change of location for the ongoing lawsuit with former CNN anchor Don Lemon, with the headquarters now said to be in Bastrop, Texas. This move is part of Musk’s larger decision to move the headquarters of X and SpaceX to Austin, Texas, in response to a California law. X has closed its San Francisco office and is looking to sublease the space as employees are being relocated to offices in San Jose and Palo Alto.

The new headquarters for X is located in a Musk-owned shopping center in Bastrop, which includes a variety of amenities. The company currently has 188 full-time employees in Texas, with plans to move employees from the Austin office to the new Bastrop location. X signed a three-year commercial lease on the property in April, making Musk his own landlord. The company has also announced plans to hire a small number of trust and safety roles in Bastrop for a “Safety X Support Center.”

Musk began acquiring land in Bastrop under an LLC called Gapped Bass in 2021, leading to the development of buildings, housing modules, and construction sites for SpaceX and The Boring Company. This rapid development has faced opposition from some residents of the town, and The Boring Company has been fined for environmental violations regarding tunneling and wastewater dumping. Additionally, Musk has reportedly opened an experimental Ad Astra school branch in Bastrop, enrolling preschool and elementary students for the upcoming school year.

In response to the relocation of X’s headquarters to Bastrop, Musk has requested that the ongoing lawsuit with Don Lemon be allowed to proceed in Texas. The move is believed to be in connection with Musk’s decision to move his companies from California to Texas due to changes in certain state laws. X has not yet commented on the relocation of its headquarters, but previous reports have indicated a shift in operations to Texas. The future of X’s presence in California remains uncertain as employees are gradually being relocated to the new Bastrop location.

The rural community of Bastrop, just outside of Austin, Texas, is now home to X’s official headquarters, joining other Musk-owned companies like SpaceX and The Boring Company. The new location in Bastrop marks a significant shift for the company, with plans to move employees from the Austin office to the new headquarters. Musk’s decision to relocate X and SpaceX to Texas is part of a broader trend of Silicon Valley companies moving to the state in response to changes in laws and regulations. As X settles into its new location, the company will continue to expand and grow in the vibrant tech ecosystem of Texas.
