Critics allege mass rape trial exposes France’s disturbing culture of sexual assault

A mass-rape trial in France has uncovered a disturbing culture of sexual violence. Dominique Pélicot, 71, admitted to drugging and allowing dozens of men to sexually abuse his wife Gisèle Pélicot, 72, over nearly a decade. He also filmed the assaults, revealing a shocking level of depravity. Pélicot claimed he had been a victim of sexual abuse himself in his youth, which he believes influenced his actions. Despite facing up to 20 years in prison, Pélicot stood by his decision to face his crimes and take responsibility.

Pélicot’s trial has brought attention to the issue of rape culture in France. Around 50 men have been arrested and are standing trial for their involvement in the assaults on Gisèle Pélicot. Many of them deny the allegations and claim they were manipulated by Pélicot or believed she had consented to the acts. The media attention surrounding Pélicot’s case has been intense due to the shocking nature of the crimes committed, with proceedings being closely monitored by the public and the media.

The revelations about Pélicot’s crimes came to light after he was caught taking inappropriate photos of women in a supermarket. An investigation uncovered a trove of thousands of images and videos depicting assaults on his wife. Gisèle Pélicot, who had been married to Dominique for 50 years, expressed her devastation upon learning of the attacks. French authorities have identified approximately 72 men who participated in the decade-long abuse, including firefighters, journalists, and pharmacists. The trial has been described as a symbol of the worst that male violence can do, with Gisèle Pélicot being praised for her bravery in testifying publicly.

The trial has sparked a larger conversation about the prevalence of rape and sexual violence in society. Céline Piques of the group Osez le Féminisme pointed out the complicity of the men who visited Pélicot’s website, where he invited them to his home for these acts. Piques criticized the lack of intervention from those who were aware of the abuse, highlighting the need for bystanders to speak out against such crimes. The Fondation des Femmes called the crimes against Gisèle Pélicot barbaric and praised her decision to testify on behalf of all women who suffer from chemical submission.

The impact of Pélicot’s crimes on his family has been profound, with Gisèle Pélicot describing the scenes of rape as unbearable and barbaric. The couple had been married for five decades and had three children together before the assaults came to light. Pélicot’s decision to forego anonymity in the trial and admit his guilt has surprised many but has been seen as important in exposing the depth of the rape culture in France. Despite his health issues during the trial, Pélicot has remained committed to facing the consequences of his actions and seeking accountability.
