Thailand’s baby pygmy hippo, Moo Deng, has become an internet sensation with millions of social media fans. The adorable hippo’s charming antics, including attempting to nibble its handler despite being toothless, have captured the hearts of many. Moo Deng’s popularity has led to unexpectedly large crowds at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province, challenging its keepers to accommodate the influx of visitors.

Normally, the zoo would receive around 800 visitors per day on weekdays and even fewer during the low season. However, with Moo Deng’s rise to fame, the zoo is now seeing between 3,000 and 4,000 people on weekdays and welcomed 20,000 visitors over the weekend. The majority of these visitors are lining up for the chance to catch a glimpse of the adorable baby pygmy hippo.

The sudden surge in visitors due to the “Moo Deng fever” has prompted the zoo’s director, Narongwit Chodchoy, to rethink its organization in order to ensure that all guests have the opportunity to see the beloved hippo. With so many people flocking to the zoo to see Moo Deng, it is essential to manage the crowds efficiently and effectively to provide a positive experience for everyone.

Despite the challenges posed by the increased number of visitors, the popularity of Moo Deng has brought renewed attention to the Khao Kheow Open Zoo and raised awareness about the conservation efforts for pygmy hippos. As a vulnerable species facing threats in the wild, the presence of Moo Deng has highlighted the importance of protecting these animals and their habitats.

In addition to attracting visitors to the zoo, Moo Deng’s fame has also sparked interest in pygmy hippos globally, shedding light on this lesser-known species. With their cute appearance and endearing personalities, pygmy hippos like Moo Deng serve as ambassadors for their species, helping to educate the public about the importance of wildlife conservation and habitat preservation.

Overall, Moo Deng’s unexpected rise to stardom has had a positive impact on the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, bringing attention to the plight of pygmy hippos while delighting visitors with its adorable presence. As the zoo continues to navigate the challenges of managing large crowds, the enduring popularity of Moo Deng serves as a reminder of the power of social media in promoting wildlife conservation and connecting people with the natural world.
