I Shed 150 Pounds By Myself: Discovering My 4 Weight Loss Strategies

Jose Matos had a very unhealthy diet, consuming upwards of 6,000 calories a day filled with salty, frozen, and processed foods such as burgers, fries, soda, and pizza rolls. However, after developing Bell’s palsy, a neurological condition causing half of his face to droop, Matos realized he needed to make a change. He embarked on a weight loss journey, dropping from 525 pounds to 375 pounds and losing his need for Type 2 diabetes and blood pressure medication in the process.

Matos credits his success in weight loss to several key factors. One of the main components of his new diet is prioritizing protein by meal prepping lunches with his wife on Sundays, opting for chicken, steak, and fish over unhealthy junk foods. Protein helps him feel fuller longer and preserves lean muscle mass, aiding in calorie burning. He also limits cravings by removing food triggers from his environment, such as cheese and tortillas, and avoiding dining out, drinking sodas, and excessive pizza roll consumption.

Additionally, Matos stresses the importance of having a strong support system throughout his weight loss journey. His family, colleagues, and a co-worker’s trainer husband have provided him with the motivation and guidance needed to create lifelong healthy habits. Matos acknowledges that weight loss is not just a sprint, but a lifetime commitment to creating positive habits. He appreciates the lessons his support system has taught him about the importance of consistency and dedication to long-term health.

In terms of exercise, Matos started his fitness journey by walking for 30 minutes and gradually incorporating squats and weightlifting sessions at the gym. He also includes 30 minutes of cardio on a treadmill or elliptical machine into his routine. Matos has adopted an exercise philosophy that motivates him to stay committed to his workouts, focusing on the progress he has made and the desire to never go back to his previous unhealthy lifestyle.

Looking towards the future, Matos is determined to reach his goal weight of 240 pounds and maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle. He acknowledges the mental fortitude gained through overcoming Bell’s palsy as a driving force behind his weight loss journey. Matos emphasizes the importance of setting realistic goals, prioritizing protein for satiety and muscle preservation, limiting cravings, building a strong support system, and adopting a consistent exercise regimen to achieve long-term success in weight loss and overall health.
