Designer of Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ Outfit Reflects on the Controversy Caused 40 Years Ago

In 1983, Maripol approached Madonna at a party in NYC and asked her to take her top off, sparking the beginning of their professional relationship. A year later, Maripol styled Madonna in a white tulle wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt for the MTV Video Music Awards, creating a polarizing yet iconic fashion moment that continues to be remembered four decades later. Maripol emphasized the importance of being true to oneself rather than conforming to societal expectations, a lesson she imparted to Madonna. This look has set a standard for future A-listers at the VMAs, with the 40th anniversary ceremony set to air in 2024. The event, popular for its fashion-forward outfits, coincides with New York Fashion Week and attracts celebrities who aim to make a statement with their attire.

The VMAs have seen their fair share of unforgettable outfits over the years, from Lady Gaga’s meat dress in 2010 to Doja Cat’s spider web threads in 2023. More classic looks, such as Aaliyah’s Roberto Cavalli gown from 2000 and Rihanna’s caramel couture from 2016, have also left a lasting impact on the fashion legacy of the VMAs. Stylists like Misa Hylton, who designed Lil’ Kim’s daring catsuit with one exposed breast in 1999, stress the importance of authenticity and belief in one’s art to create timeless ensembles for the high-profile event. Hylton’s design, inspired by Missy Elliott’s suggestion and made of lavender Indian bridal fabric, caused a stir at the VMAs, culminating in a playful moment with Diana Ross during the live broadcast.

Despite the controversy surrounding these iconic outfits, they have influenced numerous imitations and homages from other celebrities over the years. Miley Cyrus and Kylie Jenner, among others, have paid tribute to Lil’ Kim’s catsuit in their own interpretations, while Madonna’s wedding dress look has been recreated by stars like Jennifer Lopez and Paris Hilton. Even Madonna herself gave her approval when Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera reinterpreted the outfit during a performance at the 2003 VMAs. Maripol, who originally designed Madonna’s wedding ensemble, credited the enduring fame of the outfit to the combination of the song, the singer’s persona, and the vibrancy of New York City. Her impact on fashion in the city has been reciprocal, with Maripol finding inspiration in the city while also influencing its style scene.

The VMAs have become a platform for artists and designers to make bold fashion statements that leave a lasting impact on pop culture. Whether it’s Madonna’s controversial wedding dress or Lil’ Kim’s daring catsuit, these outfits have transcended the red carpet and become iconic symbols of the event. The mix of avant-garde and classic styles showcased at the VMAs continues to inspire future generations of artists and fashionistas to push the boundaries of creativity and self-expression. With each passing year, the VMAs not only celebrate musical achievements but also serve as a runway for innovative and boundary-pushing fashion that reflects the ever-evolving landscape of pop culture and entertainment.
