Real estate tycoon who nearly won Colombia’s presidential election passes away from cancer

Rodolfo Hernández, a prominent real estate magnate and anti-corruption crusader in Colombia, passed away at the age of 79 after battling colon cancer. Hernández, a civil engineer and former mayor of Bucaramanga, gained national attention in 2022 when he unexpectedly made it to the second round of the presidential election. Despite his low profile at the beginning of the campaign, Hernández garnered support from conservative voters who were disillusioned with traditional politicians in the country.

His campaign focused on anti-corruption efforts, advocating for reduced public spending, and converting government buildings into museums. Hernández’s platform resonated with many Colombians who were seeking a change from the status quo. However, he ultimately lost the runoff election to Gustavo Petro, a leftist candidate who emphasized the need for increased government intervention to address social and economic inequalities in Colombia.

Following the election, Hernández’s political influence waned as he became embroiled in several investigations that tarnished his reputation. In June, he was sentenced to five years in prison for awarding a lucrative sanitation contract to a company involving his son while serving as mayor of Bucaramanga. Despite maintaining his innocence and vowing to appeal the ruling, Hernández’s health deteriorated, leading to his placement under house arrest. He spent much of his time in the hospital due to his declining condition.

Hernández’s death marks the end of a turbulent political career that captured the attention of many Colombians. While he initially presented himself as a fresh alternative to traditional politicians, his involvement in corruption scandals undermined his credibility and overshadowed his anti-corruption stance. Despite his flaws, Hernández leaves behind a legacy of challenging the established political system and advocating for greater transparency and accountability in government.

As news of Hernández’s passing spreads, Colombians are reflecting on his impact on the country’s political landscape. While some mourn his death as the loss of a promising leader, others criticize him for his involvement in corrupt practices. Moving forward, Colombia faces the challenge of addressing systemic corruption and restoring public trust in its political institutions. Hernández’s death serves as a reminder of the complex and often contentious nature of politics in the country.
