Israelis weigh in on presidential choice amid ongoing conflict with Hamas and other terror groups: Trump vs. Harris

Support for Israel is a critical issue in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, as Israel faces multi-front wars against Hamas and Hezbollah and concerns about a wider conflict with Iran. Israelis in Jerusalem were interviewed by Fox News Digital to gauge their opinions on the two candidates, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Some Israelis expressed support for Trump, praising his efforts to bring the U.S. closer to a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during his presidency. Others, however, believed that Harris would be better for Israel’s future, citing her representation of important values for Israeli society, such as democracy.

Professor Moti Stein from Hebrew University in Jerusalem believed that Vice President Harris would be good for Israel, emphasizing the significance of values she embodies for the future of Israeli society. However, concerns were raised by some Israelis regarding the direction a Harris administration might take when it comes to supporting Israel. Some individuals, like Baruch Kalman, expressed skepticism about Harris’ commitment to Israel, feeling that she prioritizes the concerns of Gazans and Hamas over those of Israel. Conversely, supporters of Trump argued that he has already demonstrated his support for Israel and would be a better candidate for the Jewish state’s interests.

Anna Gullko, an Israeli residing in Jerusalem, expressed support for Trump based on the belief that his policy decisions are influenced by biblical values that align with what she perceives as God’s demands. Zvika Klein, editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem Post, outlined his concerns with a potential Harris presidency, noting that her perceived lack of strength on the global stage could be worrisome for Jews and Israelis. Klein praised Trump for his actions in support of Israel, including the realization of the Abraham Accords and the relocation of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem. He emphasized the need for a Trump administration with skilled individuals who understand the region to continue facilitating positive relations with Israel.

The upcoming election holds significance for the sizable American population living in Israel, with up to 600,000 American citizens residing either temporarily or permanently in the country. The Jerusalem Post reported that approximately half a million of these citizens may be eligible to vote in November’s election, underlining the potential impact of their votes on the outcome. With views divided among Israelis regarding which candidate would be best for Israel, the election’s results could have far-reaching implications for the relationship between the U.S. and the Jewish state, as well as the broader Middle East region.
