Gen Z is opting out of being bridesmaids, and money isn’t the only reason

The rising costs of weddings are causing Generation Z and millennial bridesmaids to decline being a part of bridal parties due to the financial burden and time commitment involved. Weddings now average around $33,000, with an increased focus on multi-day events and destination nuptials. Social media is contributing to the extravagant nature of ceremonies, pushing couples to meet unrealistic expectations that are beyond their budgets and those of their wedding parties, including bridesmaids.

Bridesmaids are starting to refuse to take on the responsibilities of being in a bridal party due to the increasing costs and time-consuming nature of helping prepare for the wedding. Some bridesmaids are spending significant amounts of money, such as one woman who claimed to have spent $12,000 on the various events associated with being a bridesmaid. Content creators on platforms like TikTok are advocating for normalizing saying no to being bridesmaids or maids of honor, highlighting the financial and emotional strain it can put on individuals.

Efforts are being made to communicate the financial costs and event expectations to bridesmaids when asking them to be part of the wedding party. Bridesmaids are often expected to attend multiple events leading up to the wedding, including bridal showers, bachelor and bachelorette trips, welcome parties, rehearsal dinners, and the ceremony itself. Brides are being advised to consider whether it is truly necessary to have bridesmaids if the individuals they have asked feel unable to fulfill the responsibilities associated with the role.

Individuals who have experienced being bridesmaids, like content creator Stephanie Greenstreet, are advocating for a shift in mindset when it comes to accepting or declining the role. Greenstreet expressed that the role of being a bridesmaid is hard work, time-consuming, and can be a test of friendship. She encourages brides to consider whether the person they are asking to be a bridesmaid will truly be able to fulfill the duties expected of them and to respect their decision if they decline the role. It is important to evaluate whether having a bridesmaid who is unable to fulfill their duties will ultimately benefit the bride in the long run.

The rising costs and increasing demands associated with being a bridesmaid are leading some individuals to decline the role, opting instead to prioritize their financial well-being and time. Couples are being advised to consider the financial implications and time commitments for bridesmaids when planning their weddings. It is essential for brides to have open and honest conversations with potential bridesmaids about the costs and expectations associated with being part of the bridal party. Ultimately, the decision to decline being a bridesmaid should be respected and viewed as a way to prioritize personal well-being and financial stability.
