Timor-Leste celebrated the 25th anniversary of its referendum on independence from Indonesia, with thousands of citizens gathering in the capital Dili to commemorate the vote that led to the country’s current democratic system. Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao expressed gratitude to the international community, especially the United Nations, for their support during the referendum process in 1999. UN chief Antonio Guterres also attended the event and called on the world to do more to support the young democracy.

The referendum in 1999 saw nearly 80 per cent of Timorese vote to split from Indonesia, bringing an end to a brutal 24-year military occupation that resulted in the deaths of up to 250,000 people. The joy of independence was short-lived as Indonesian security forces and militias launched attacks, destroying infrastructure and displacing hundreds of thousands of people. The post-referendum violence killed around 1,400 people before Timor-Leste was recognised as an independent state in 2002. Despite the challenges faced by the young nation, the anniversary serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of the Timorese people.

Gusmao emphasized the role of the international community, particularly the United Nations, in ensuring Timor-Leste’s independence. He highlighted the solidarity and efforts of various countries and organisations that supported the referendum process and contributed to the country’s journey towards self-governance. The presence of Guterres at the anniversary event underscored the continued commitment of the UN to supporting Timor-Leste as it seeks to build a stable and prosperous future for its citizens.

The 25th anniversary of the referendum is a significant milestone for Timor-Leste, marking a momentous chapter in its history and commemorating the sacrifices made by its people in the struggle for independence. The atrocities committed during the post-referendum violence serve as a painful reminder of the challenges faced by the country in its path towards peace and reconciliation. Despite these hardships, Timor-Leste has made remarkable progress in consolidating its democracy and promoting social and economic development.

The anniversary celebrations in Dili were a testament to the unity and resilience of the Timorese people, who have shown remarkable strength and courage in overcoming adversity and building a better future for themselves and future generations. The presence of international dignitaries at the event reflects the global community’s support for Timor-Leste and its continued efforts to ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the region. As the country looks towards the future, it is essential for the international community to remain engaged and committed to supporting Timor-Leste in its efforts to build a strong and prosperous nation.

The 25th anniversary of the referendum on independence is a time for reflection and celebration for the people of Timor-Leste, as they honour the sacrifices made in the struggle for freedom. The commitment of the international community to supporting Timor-Leste on its path towards peace and development is essential for ensuring that the country continues to make progress and overcome the challenges that lie ahead. As Timor-Leste commemorates this historic milestone, it serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit and resilience of its people, who have shown great determination in building a brighter future for themselves and their nation.
