A suspected drunk driver has been charged in connection with the death of Columbus Blue Jackets star forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother. Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were killed while biking in New Jersey. Sean Higgins, 43, has been arrested for driving under the influence and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide. It is not clear when Higgins will make his first court appearance. Johnny Gaudreau leaves behind a daughter, Noa, and a son named Johnny.

The police report stated that Higgins admitted to consuming five to six beers before the accident, which contributed to his reckless driving. The Gaudreau brothers were riding their bikes on a country road when they were struck by Higgins from behind. Johnny and Matthew were planning to be groomsmen at their sister’s wedding in Philadelphia the day after the accident. A rehearsal for the wedding had been held just hours before the brothers’ tragic death.

The Columbus Blue Jackets released a statement expressing shock and devastation over the loss of Johnny Gaudreau. They described him as not only a great hockey player but also a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend. The team extended heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends, and asked for prayers for the Gaudreau family during their time of grief. The Calgary Flames, where Gaudreau played for nine seasons, also released a statement mourning his tragic death.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed shock and sadness over the passing of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew. He described Gaudreau as a beloved teammate and skilled playmaker, known for his passion for the game and dazzling skills on the ice. Gaudreau was a fan favorite and participated in the NHL All-Star Game seven times. He will be remembered fondly in Calgary and Columbus, as well as at Boston College and Gloucester Catholic High School in New Jersey.

The deaths of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew have left the hockey world in mourning. Both players had significant impacts on the teams they represented and the communities they were a part of. Condolences have poured in from the NHL, the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Calgary Flames, and fans around the world who were touched by Johnny’s talent and spirit. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the devastating consequences it can have on families and communities.

The Gaudreau brothers’ untimely deaths have left a deep void in the lives of their loved ones. As the investigation into the incident continues, family, friends, and fans are left to grieve and remember the legacy that Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau leave behind. The hockey world will always remember Johnny Gaudreau as a talented player, loving family man, and beloved teammate who brought joy and passion to the game of hockey. May he and his brother Matthew rest in peace.
