Basel, with its German-speaking community on the Rhine River bordering France and Germany, was selected over Geneva to host the world’s largest music competition. The city council of Basel expressed their delight in the decision, stating that they will do everything possible to be good hosts for the event.

Switzerland earned the right to host the Eurovision Song Contest after Swiss singer Nemo emerged as the winner of the 68th edition in Sweden. The Swiss public broadcaster SSR-SRG played a key role in the selection process, considering various criteria such as the hall’s suitability for hosting, sustainability initiatives, safety measures, available funds, and creative ideas for side events. This coming competition in Basel will take place at the St. Jakobshalle indoor arena, attracting millions of viewers from around the world.

Nemo’s victory marked the first time Switzerland had won the Eurovision Song Contest since 1988, when Canadian singer Celine Dion competed under the Swiss flag. The event, hosted annually by the European Broadcasting Union, brings together broadcasters from various countries to participate in the musical extravaganza. The EBU is headquartered in Geneva, where the logistical planning for the event takes place. The Eurovision Song Contest is known for its large viewership, with this year’s event in Malmö reaching over 160 million television viewers and 80 million YouTube users worldwide.

The advertising value of the Eurovision Song Contest is estimated to be around 805 million euros, showcasing the significant impact and reach of the event. Switzerland has a historical connection to the contest, having hosted and won the first edition in the city of Lugano in 1956. The selection of Basel as the host city for the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest is seen as a great opportunity for the country to showcase its cultural heritage and musical talent on a global stage. The city council of Basel is committed to ensuring the success of the event and providing a memorable experience for participants and viewers alike.

The Eurovision Song Contest is a highly anticipated event that brings together people from across Europe and beyond to celebrate music and culture. Basel’s selection as the host city for the 2021 competition reflects the city’s reputation as a vibrant cultural hub with a rich history. The event is expected to boost tourism and generate economic benefits for the region, as thousands of visitors are anticipated to flock to Basel for the event. The Eurovision Song Contest in Basel is set to be a spectacular showcase of talent, creativity, and diversity, with participants from various countries competing for the prestigious title.
