Harris concludes two-day Georgia bus tour with impassioned plea to voters during rally in Savannah

Vice President Kamala Harris made a visit to Georgia in an effort to rally Democratic support outside the typically frequented Atlanta area. During a visit to Savannah, she acknowledged the state’s pivotal role in recent elections, specifically in sending two Democratic senators to Washington. She urged Georgians to mobilize once again and deliver in the upcoming election cycle. Harris also expressed her commitment to supporting small businesses and new startups, hinting at a forthcoming tax credit proposal for them.

Harris, along with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, concluded a two-day bus tour in southeastern Georgia, culminating in a rally in Savannah. The event drew a crowd of 7,500 energetic supporters who eagerly awaited Harris’s speech. However, the rally faced interruptions from protesters, with Harris responding firmly before continuing her address to the audience. The event highlighted the importance of engaging with voters in areas of Georgia beyond the traditional Democratic strongholds.

Despite Georgia being a key battleground state, Democratic leaders from Savannah emphasized the importance of expanding party support beyond metro Atlanta. Mayor Van Johnson stressed the distinct flavors and histories of different cities and counties within Georgia, noting that statewide strategy is crucial for success in elections. The presence of the Harris campaign in southern Georgia, with the establishment of multiple field offices, reflects this effort to connect with all areas of the state.

The success of Democrats in recent Georgia elections, including the 2021 Senate runoff races, has prompted a shift in campaign strategies. The broad coalition of voters in Georgia requires a comprehensive approach that includes engaging with various communities across the state. The Harris campaign’s volunteer efforts saw a significant increase following the launch of her White House bid, with over 35,000 people joining volunteer activities in Georgia. Harris’s position at the top of the ticket has also impacted down-ballot races, with some Republican opponents distancing themselves from former President Trump.

The Democratic Party’s focus on Georgia is evident in the Harris campaign’s efforts to reach voters throughout the state, including areas outside of metro Atlanta. Harris’s visit to Savannah and the surrounding regions signals a commitment to building on past successes and mobilizing support in all corners of Georgia. With the state playing a pivotal role in recent elections, Democratic leaders are hopeful that continued engagement with voters in diverse communities will lead to positive outcomes in future races. The enthusiasm and support demonstrated by rally attendees in Savannah reflect the party’s dedication to expanding its reach and securing electoral victories in Georgia.
