The appearance of dead fish and a foul smell in certain parts of the Gulf continues to be a topic of discussion in the local and national agenda. The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change is awaiting the analysis results of samples taken from the 7 creeks flowing into the Gulf and the discharge points of the Atatürk Industrial Zone and Kemalpaşa Industrial Zone treatment plants.
It was observed that a ship belonging to İZSU filtered the water it took from the waters of the Alsancak Port and discharged it back into the sea. This method aims to increase the oxygen level in the water. The 4 hydrosoft pumps placed on the Bayraklı beach by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department Directorate to increase the oxygen level in the sea were also removed from their location.
Those who do not comply with the decision will be fined. The provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry officers are warning the public not to fish in the Gulf where fish deaths have been observed. Warning posters have also been put up by Nursel Ölmez, the headman of Turan Neighborhood in Bayraklı district, where dead fish were seen. Ölmez stated that the smell in the gulf, where fish deaths have been occurring since last week, has started to decrease slightly.
Ölmez explained that the District Agriculture Directorate officers informed her that fishing is prohibited, and fines will be imposed if caught. She said, “They informed me that if caught, a fine will be applied. I felt the necessity to write a warning note because there are many people who come here for fishing, and they have informed me about that. Those who are conscious don’t come, but I don’t know about nights. We warned during the day.”
