Daniel Pinto, a British “danger tourist,” enjoys visiting the world’s most dangerous countries to explore areas tourists rarely see. He recently spent a month in Libya, hitchhiking his way around the country with a budget of $10 a day. During his time there, he was detained for seven hours at gunpoint at an army checkpoint, which he describes as his worst situation yet.
On May 29, 2024, Daniel traveled to Libya from Tunisia, where he was originally traveling. He entered the country through a new E-visa system that had just been implemented in March 2024. Despite the UK Foreign Office advising against all travel to Libya, Daniel wanted to take the opportunity to see what the country was like and explore places such as Tripoli, Leptis Magna, Ghadames, and the Nafusa Mountains.
During his time in Libya, Daniel visited various cities and landmarks, including the Nafusa Mountains, home to Libyan Berbers, and the ancient granary Qasr El hajj. He also spent time exploring the old city of Tripoli and was impressed by the architecture and random Roman artifacts scattered throughout the area. He found the black market in Tripoli to be a particularly interesting experience.
Throughout his journey, Daniel documented his travels on platforms like TikTok and Instagram under the handle @dnzh.travels. His itinerary included hitchhiking to Libya, exploring cities such as Misrata and Benghazi, and attempting to visit Ghadames, where he was detained briefly. Despite the challenges he faced, Daniel was able to see many unique and fascinating places during his 21 days in the country.
Despite the risks involved in traveling to dangerous countries, Daniel continues to pursue his passion for exploring and showcasing these often overlooked destinations. He has previously visited countries like Iran, Iraq, and Syria and plans to continue his travels to other potentially dangerous locations in the future. His experiences in Libya, including the close call at the army checkpoint, have only fueled his desire to see more of the world and share his adventures with others through social media.
