27-year-old Uruguayan footballer tragically passes away days after collapsing on field during a match

Juan Izquierdo, a 27-year-old Uruguayan soccer player who previously played for Nacional, tragically passed away after collapsing during a Copa Libertadores match in Brazil. He died at Hospital Albert Einstein in Sao Paulo due to cardiorespiratory arrest associated with cardiac arrhythmia. Izquierdo had been placed in neurological critical care due to increased intracranial pressure and had been on a ventilator since the incident occurred during Nacional’s game against Sao Paulo. His wife, Selena, shared a heartfelt message on social media bidding farewell to her husband and stating that a part of her died with him.

Teammate Mateo Antoni remembered Izquierdo as a mentor and friend, expressing gratitude for the impact he had on his life. Izquierdo began his professional career with Cerro in the Uruguayan Primera Division before moving to clubs such as Penarol, Wanderers, Nacional, and Liverpool. He also played for Atletico in Liga MX in Mexico, returning to Nacional in 2024 after a successful stint at Liverpool which included helping the team win a Uruguayan league title in 2023. During his time at Nacional, he started 13 of the 14 games he appeared in, showcasing his talent and dedication to the sport.

The news of Izquierdo’s sudden passing sent shockwaves through the soccer community, with many expressing their condolences and sharing memories of the player.
