The Intolerable Sorrow of Everton – The Most Desolate Club in the Premier League

Euston station in London was the scene of a public backlash by disgruntled Everton fans who targeted players with abusive language following a 4-0 defeat to Tottenham over the weekend. The incident, which was caught on video and circulated online, triggered conflicting reactions from both sides. Everton players, including Neal Maupay, a primary target of the abuse, were left questioning why such behaviour was deemed acceptable. Meanwhile, Everton FC’s fan groups were quick to condemn the events. Some supporters argued, however, that their rage was justified given the club’s ongoing issues and disappointing performances.

The Everton FC seniors have had a poor start to the season, with their first two matches ending in a combined defeat of 7-0. These games mark the first time that the team has lost two opening matches by three or more goals. Apart from Everton and Southampton, all other teams in the Premier League have scored this season. Everton has managed only two shots on target, the lowest number across all Premier League teams. Furthermore, the Brighton match held at Goodison Park ended with significantly lower attendance, which has added to the growing frustrations within the fanbase.

A review of the performance of Everton’s players has further highlighted the team’s present predicaments. Notably, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has not demonstrated the same form as last season, while Maupay and Beto remain the only viable centre-forward options. Additional concerns linger about Everton’s limited full-back options, a light central midfield, and the potential decline in Jordan Pickford’s performance.

Off-pitch problems compound Everton FC’s challenges. In particular, the sale of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa did alleviate concerns over a possible third points deduction related to profitability and sustainability rules. However, lingering concerns about other issues remain, particularly relating to Everton’s books. Prominently, Everton’s ownership issue continues to upset supporters who have protested against Farhard Moshiri’s regime for several years. This lack of confidence is further amplified by complex legal challenges.

John Textor currently appears to be the front-runner to assume ownership of the Everton FC. Although he would need to divest his stake in Crystal Palace due to financial and regulatory constraints, his track record raises concerns. His involvement with other clubs, such as Molenbeek, Lyon’s men’s team, and Palace, has been marked by instability. Additionally, Botafogo, a Brazilian club under Textor’s management, underwent a dramatic collapse while leading the title race, leading Textor to make accusations of match-fixing and corruption which were later dismissed.

Despite the current gloomy atmosphere surrounding Everton, there are reasons to maintain some optimism. Everton has managed to bounce back after losing the first two games in previous seasons. The club has a competent manager who is known for defying expectations and they have kept Jarrad Branthwaite, a talented young defender. Most importantly, the club’s relocation to a new, modern stadium next year could mark the beginning of brighter days ahead for Everton FC.
