The factory in Osaka’s Yodogawa Ward was closed in December due to ageing facilities, and production was shifted to the factory in the city of Kinokawa. The company, Kobayashi, has been criticized by the government for taking two months to announce the health impacts of its products. The company began recalling products on Mar 22 after reports of kidney ailments. Kobayashi’s products are also consumed in other countries, with a case of acute renal failure reported in Taiwan.
Taiwan’s food and drug administration is investigating three “unexpected health reactions” that may be related to imported materials from Kobayashi. A Chinese consumers association has urged consumers to stop using potentially affected products, citing concerns about the risk of using Kobayashi products. Japan’s health ministry is aware of the Taiwanese cases but declined to comment further on any international cases.
Kobayashi sells Beni-Koji wholesale to 52 companies, which have conducted voluntary inspections. As of Friday, these companies have found no materials requiring medical consultation. However, TV Asahi reported that some 1,800 foodmakers could potentially be affected by the health issues related to Kobayashi’s products. Beni-Koji contains Monascus purpureus, a red mould used as a food colouring.
The ongoing situation has raised concerns in both Japan and other countries where Kobayashi’s products are consumed. The delayed announcement of the health impacts of the products by the company has sparked criticism from the government. As the investigation continues into the reported cases of kidney ailments and acute renal failure, consumers are being urged to be cautious and to stop using potentially affected products.
With the health ministry in Japan being aware of the Taiwanese cases and reports of unexpected health reactions, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold and what actions will be taken by both the company and the authorities. The impact of these health issues on consumers, as well as the foodmakers and companies involved in the distribution of Kobayashi’s products, is being closely monitored. As investigations continue and more information becomes available, it is important for regulators and consumers alike to stay informed and take appropriate precautions.
