Ukrainian capital’s hydroelectric dam targeted in widespread Russian assault on country

On August 26, a dam in Kyiv, part of the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant, was struck during a massive Russian attack across Ukraine. At least four people were killed and eight injured in the attack, which involved at least 100 missiles and 100 drones. Timofiy Mylovanov, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed the damage to the plant, stating that if the dam were to collapse, a significant portion of Kyiv would be flooded. The Russian morning attack specifically targeted the Kyiv hydro dam, causing damage to the hydro power plant.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova had made claims in July that Kyiv was preparing to destroy the dams of the Kyiv hydroelectric power plant and the Kaniv reservoir. However, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry denied these accusations, calling them “absurd” and stating that there was no realistic purpose or motive for Ukraine to destroy its own infrastructure or endanger its people. This incident occurred just over a year after Russian forces had blown up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant and the adjacent dam in Kherson Oblast, leading to a large-scale humanitarian and environmental disaster across southern Ukraine.

The attack on Ukraine by Russia involved a significant amount of firepower, with over 100 missiles and approximately 100 drones being used in the wide-scale assault. The explosions were heard in Kyiv shortly before 8:30 a.m., causing panic and chaos in the city. The attack has led to tragic loss of life and injuries, and the damage caused to the Kyiv hydro dam and power plant poses a threat of potential flooding to a significant portion of the city if the dam were to collapse. President Zelensky has condemned the attack as a blatant act of aggression and called for international support in condemning Russia’s actions.

The Ukrainian government’s swift response to the attack on the Kyiv hydro dam includes efforts to assess the extent of the damage and ensure the safety of the surrounding areas. Emergency measures are being taken to prevent any further escalation of the situation and to protect the residents of Kyiv from potential flooding in the event of a dam collapse. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine continues to refute any claims made by Russia regarding Ukraine’s intentions to harm its own infrastructure, emphasizing that such accusations are baseless and aimed at furthering Russian propaganda and disinformation.

As the conflict between Ukraine and Russia intensifies, it is crucial for the international community to stand in solidarity with Ukraine and support its efforts to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The attack on the Kyiv hydro dam is just one example of the ongoing aggression and violence perpetrated by Russia against Ukraine. By supporting independent journalism in Ukraine and raising awareness of the situation, individuals can contribute to the fight for freedom and democracy in the region. It is essential to hold those responsible for the attack and the loss of life accountable and to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict that respects the sovereignty and rights of the Ukrainian people.
