The late U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s daughter, Erica Lee Carter, has submitted paperwork to be a candidate in a special election to finish her mother’s two-year term representing the Houston congressional district. Carter is running as a Democrat, following in her mother’s footsteps. Two Republican candidates are also competing for the position in the solidly Democratic district. The special election is scheduled for November 5, the same day voters will choose who will succeed Jackson Lee and serve the district for the next two years. Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner was chosen as the Democratic nominee earlier this month.

If Carter wins the special election, she will serve until the next Congress begins its work in January. She expressed her commitment to fighting for justice, equality, healthcare, human rights, and economic opportunity for all in the 18th district, following her mother’s legacy. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Bill Clinton were among those who paid tribute to Jackson Lee at her funeral, where she was remembered for her dedication to serving the people. The late congresswoman had already secured the Democratic nomination for what would have been her 16th term before her passing on July 19.

Erica Lee Carter’s decision to run for her mother’s seat has sparked interest and support from various political figures and members of the community. Her passion and dedication to continue her mother’s work have resonated with many, as she seeks to represent the 18th district in Congress. The special election will be a closely watched race, as voters decide who will carry on the legacy of Sheila Jackson Lee in advocating for the needs of the district. Carter’s entry into the race adds a personal and emotional element to the campaign, as she aims to honor her mother’s memory through her own service to the community.

The upcoming November election will not only determine who will complete the remainder of Sheila Jackson Lee’s term but also who will represent the district for the next two years. With Erica Lee Carter in the running as a Democratic candidate, along with Republican contenders, the race is expected to be competitive as each candidate vies for the opportunity to serve the people of the 18th district. The significance of this election goes beyond filling a vacant seat, as it marks a continuation of Jackson Lee’s legacy and a new chapter in the representation of the Houston congressional district. Voters will have the chance to make their voices heard and choose the individual they believe will best uphold the values and priorities of the community.
