Coco Gauff looks to Kamala Harris for inspiration as she aims to defend US Open title

Coco Gauff, after her remarkable performance at the U.S. Open last year, is now drawing inspiration from Vice President Kamala Harris. She believes that regardless of political affiliations, Harris’ candidacy as the daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants highlights the progress for people of color in the United States. Gauff expressed her excitement at witnessing this advancement in her lifetime, acknowledging the efforts of many individuals who have paved the way for others like herself.

Reflecting on her victory at the U.S. Open last year, where she met with former President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and Vice President Kamala Harris, Gauff aspires to become the first female president of the United States. She admires Harris as an example of how someone can rise from humble beginnings to the highest office in the country. Gauff appreciates the opportunity to meet with Harris briefly last year and hopes to have a more in-depth conversation with her in the future.

Gauff is preparing to defend her U.S. Open title, facing Varvara Gracheva in the opening round. Despite the pressure that comes with being the defending champion, she views it as a privilege and an opportunity to build upon her previous success. Adopting a new mantra from a comment she saw on TikTok, Gauff is focusing on embracing her victories rather than stressing over them. She acknowledges the significance of her achievements and is determined to add to her list of accomplishments in the future, whether it happens at this year’s U.S. Open or in subsequent tournaments.

The past year has been a mix of highs and lows for Gauff, including semifinal finishes at the French and Australian Opens and a tough fourth-round exit at Wimbledon. She also faced challenges in Cincinnati, where her opponents targeted her forehand to exploit weaknesses. However, Gauff finds solace in the realization that the pressures she faces as a young athlete are not unique to her. Connecting with other athletes, such as those she met at the Paris Olympics, has helped her understand that nerves and pressures are a normal part of the competitive experience.

Zheng Qinwen, the Chinese hurdler who found inspiration in videos of former hurdler Liu Xiang, shares Gauff’s sentiment of drawing motivation from past champions. Watching footage of Liu Xiang’s victories fueled Zheng’s determination to achieve similar success. Zheng recognizes the genetic advantages that other athletes may have but remains focused on her own aspirations. Her story mirrors Gauff’s journey of overcoming obstacles and finding motivation in the achievements of those who have come before her. Both athletes demonstrate resilience and determination in their pursuit of excellence in their respective sports.
