Yacht sinks in Sicily due to a series of mistakes, suggests owner of ship maker: ‘The outcome was foreseen’

The sinking of the luxury yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily has been attributed to an “endless chain of errors” by the crew, according to Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of The Italian Sea Group. Costantino, who owns the company that built the vessel in 2008, believes that the tragedy could have been avoided if a series of activities had been done to prevent the situation. He blames the crew for not taking appropriate actions to secure the boat during a violent storm, which ultimately led to its sinking on August 19.

Costantino claims that the crew’s errors were numerous, including not being aware of the weather conditions and not taking necessary precautions to secure the vessel. He argues that the crew should not have been in their cabins when the yacht sank, and questions why they did not know about the incoming disturbance. According to the Italian coast guard, the yacht sank around 5 a.m. local time, resulting in the rescue of 15 people on board, while the body of the yacht’s chef was recovered. Subsequent search operations led to the discovery of five bodies, with one person still missing.

In his interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Costantino emphasized that the crew should have taken appropriate actions to secure the yacht in a weather alert situation. He suggested that the guests should have been put at the ship’s meeting point, the engines started, and the anchors either pulled up or released automatically. Costantino believes that if these maneuvers had been carried out, the tragedy could have been avoided, with zero risk involved. He dismissed claims that the yacht sunk in seconds, stating that it would have taken around six minutes for it to go down after water started entering.

The missing passengers from the yacht Bayesian include British tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s daughter Hannah, as well as Jonathan Bloomer, Judy Bloomer, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife Neda. Lynch, who had recently been acquitted in a fraud trial, was celebrating with family and friends on the yacht when the incident occurred. Despite the tragic outcome, Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife, was among those who were rescued. As the search for the remaining missing person continues, authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the luxury yacht.

Costantino’s assertions about the crew’s errors and the preventable nature of the tragedy have sparked discussions about accountability and safety measures on board luxury vessels. The ongoing investigation into the incident will likely shed more light on the events leading up to the sinking of the yacht and the actions taken by the crew. Meanwhile, the families and loved ones of the victims are left grappling with the tragic loss, as they await more information about the circumstances that led to the sinking of the Bayesian. As the search operations continue, authorities will work to provide closure and answers to those affected by this devastating event.
