Live coverage: President Biden to headline Day 1 as DNC kicks off

President Biden will address the Democratic convention with the majority of his party feeling optimistic about his presidency. A recent CBS News/YouGov survey shows that three in four Democrats describe his presidency as “excellent” or “good.” However, this positivity does not extend to voters overall, with most independents and Republicans viewing his presidency more negatively. This raises questions about the support for Vice President Kamala Harris, as there is a connection between opinions of the Biden presidency and backing for Harris. Those who view President Biden’s presidency positively are overwhelmingly voting for Harris, while those who feel he has been doing a poor job are backing former President Donald Trump.

Interestingly, voters who rate Biden’s presidency as “fair” are mostly independents and disaffected Democrats, and a majority of them are supporting Harris over Trump. This indicates that even those who may not be entirely pleased with Biden’s presidency are still leaning towards Harris. The survey was conducted with a representative sample of 3,258 registered voters nationwide, and the results were weighted according to gender, age, race, and education based on the U.S. Census. The margin of error for registered voters is ±2.1 points, and battleground states include AZ, GA, MI, NC, NV, PA, and WI.

Overall, the survey findings suggest that while Democrats are feeling positive about President Biden’s presidency, the sentiment is not shared by voters across the political spectrum. Independents and Republicans are more likely to view his presidency negatively, with a majority of Republicans rating it as “poor.” This divide in opinions could impact support for Vice President Harris, with those who view Biden’s presidency positively overwhelmingly supporting her and those with a negative view backing Trump.

It is important to note that opinions of the Biden presidency are influencing voter preferences in the upcoming election. Voters who feel positively about his presidency are more likely to support Harris, while those who have a negative view are leaning towards Trump. However, even those who rate Biden’s presidency as “fair” are favoring Harris over Trump, indicating a more favorable view towards the Democratic ticket overall. These findings highlight the importance of public perception and presidential approval in shaping the political landscape leading up to the election.

The survey results showcase the complex dynamics at play within the electorate, with varying opinions on President Biden’s presidency influencing voter preferences for the upcoming election. While Democrats are generally optimistic about his presidency, this sentiment is not shared by a majority of independents and Republicans. These differing views have implications for support for Vice President Harris, with positive feelings towards Biden translating into support for her candidacy. As the election approaches, understanding these dynamics and their impact on voter behavior will be crucial for both parties in shaping their strategies and messaging.
