A severe thunderstorm hit the tri-state area, causing heavy rain and flooding that disrupted travel across the region on Sunday night. The storm dumped 3 to 5 inches of rain, leading to delayed trains, canceled flights, and flooded roadways in parts of Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens. Shocking footage showed cars battling rising waters, while the 86th Street Traverse in Central Park was impassable due to flood waters. Parts of the Garden State Parkway were also underwater, and cars struggled to navigate the rapidly rising waters on the highway.

In Connecticut, the town of Oxford experienced fast-moving rain that swept away cars, while some vehicles became submerged. In Southbury, a man with a prosthetic leg and his dog were rescued by a good Samaritan after their vehicle got caught in floodwaters. At LaGuardia Airport, travelers faced long lines and flight cancellations due to the storm. Footage showed stranded passengers trying to figure out their next move, with some resorting to sitting or lying down on the floor as they waited.

Both LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International Airport reported flight disruptions due to the severe weather, with the NYPD warning of potential disruptions at JFK Airport as well. Amtrak service between New York and Philadelphia was temporarily suspended because of flooding in Newark. Meteorologists noted that the rain came down particularly hard, with more than an inch of water falling in Central Park and up to 5 inches of rain in other parts of the tristate area.

According to a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, the rain was expected to taper off late Sunday night into early Monday before more thunderstorms hit the region in the afternoon. Swimming at Brooklyn beaches, Rockaway beaches, and Riis Beach was prohibited on Monday due to rip currents caused by the severe weather. The storm left many travelers stranded and caused significant disruptions to transportation in the tri-state area, demonstrating the power and impact of extreme weather events on everyday life in the region.

Overall, the severe thunderstorm that hit the tri-state area on Sunday night caused widespread flooding, canceled flights, and disrupted travel across the region. The heavy rain led to flooded roadways, submerged vehicles, and rescue efforts in towns like Oxford and Southbury, Connecticut. Airports like LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International Airport experienced flight disruptions due to the lousy weather, while Amtrak service between New York and Philadelphia was temporarily suspended because of flooding. Meteorologists noted the intensity of the rain, with parts of the tristate area receiving as much as 5 inches of rain and warned of additional thunderstorms on the horizon.
