Former Supervisor Says Injured Ferguson Police Officer Wanted to Reform Department “From the Inside”

A Black police officer, Travis Brown, was critically injured during a protest in Ferguson marking the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown’s death. Travis, who joined the Ferguson police force earlier this year, wanted to make a difference from inside the department and follow in his father’s footsteps. Travis’s father was also a police officer. Demonstrations turned violent when protesters destroyed a fence outside the police department, leading to Travis being attacked and suffering a severe brain injury.

Travis Brown, not related to Michael Brown, worked for 11 years with the St. Louis County Police before joining the Ferguson police force. He is described as a good police officer by his former supervisor, Lt. Ray Rice. Rice stated that Brown joined the force to make a positive impact and be of service to the community. Despite having a father in law enforcement, Brown had negative encounters with police growing up, which motivated him to join the force to make a difference from the inside.

The protest in Ferguson was to commemorate Michael Brown’s death, a pivotal moment in the Black Lives Matter movement. Michael Brown, an 18-year-old Black individual, was shot and killed by a white officer in 2014. Travis Brown, a father of two young daughters, is now fighting for his life in the hospital after being attacked during the protest. The accused attacker, Elijah Gantt, faces charges of assault, resisting arrest, and property damage. Many in the community were left wondering about the anger and violence in the protest given the changes in the Ferguson police department over the past decade.

Ferguson has made significant changes in its police force since the death of Michael Brown in 2014. The department now has more Black officers, increased training on crisis intervention and avoiding bias, and officers wear body cameras for accountability. Despite these changes, the attack on Travis Brown has drawn a strong reaction from residents and authorities in Ferguson, who question the motives behind the violent protest. Police Chief Troy Doyle expressed frustration over the incident, emphasizing the need for peace and safety in the community.

The attack on Travis Brown has sparked outrage and concern among Ferguson residents, who expressed their support and prayers for Travis and his family. The community, which is predominantly Black, has come together to condemn the violence and show solidarity with the injured officer. The incident has raised questions about the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement officers and the need for continued reform and improvement in police-community relations.

As Travis Brown continues to fight for his life in the hospital, the community of Ferguson is rallying behind him and his family. The incident has reignited discussions about racial equity, police reform, and the challenges faced by Black police officers in the line of duty. While progress has been made in Ferguson over the past decade, the attack on Travis Brown serves as a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done to ensure the safety and well-being of both officers and the community they serve.
