Winnipeg Transit’s on-request service, which has been operating as a pilot project for the past three years, is expanding its footprint into northwest Winnipeg and becoming a permanent service. Mayor Scott Gillingham announced that the service will be integrated into a new app, making it easier for residents in low-density neighbourhoods to access transit services. The upgrade to the Winnipeg Transit Plus app is expected to launch on August 27, and the current on-request app will be discontinued. The expansion of the service is part of the city’s plan to improve accessibility to jobs, education, and essential services, with more communities benefiting from the convenient on-request transit service.

The success of the on-request service over the past three years has demonstrated its value to the community, leading to its expansion into new areas. Service will be added to the new northwest zone on September 1, with a new route connecting Castlebury Meadows and Waterford Green to the Garden City Shopping Centre during peak times. Point Douglas Coun. Vivian Santos expressed excitement about the addition of a fourth zone to the On-Request service, stating that it will provide enhanced transit options for the community and improve accessibility and convenience for residents. More information about the service and the new zone can be found on the city’s website.

The integration of On-Request into more communities is a significant step forward in improving transit accessibility and convenience for Winnipeggers. By expanding the service and introducing a new zone in northwest Winnipeg, residents in low-density neighbourhoods will have better access to public transportation. This move aligns with the city’s goal of enhancing transit options and connectivity, ultimately improving the overall transit experience for residents. The positive impact of the service’s expansion is expected to benefit a larger population and contribute to the success of Winnipeg Transit’s new network set to launch next summer.

Coun. Janice Lukes, chairperson of the standing policy committee on public works, praised the success of the On-Request service and emphasized the importance of making Winnipeg Transit services accessible to more people in the city. The service has proven to be invaluable in providing convenient transportation options for residents in areas without full-time transit services. With the expansion of the service and the addition of a new zone in northwest Winnipeg, more residents will be able to access transit services, further improving their connectivity to essential destinations. The integration of the service into a new app is expected to streamline the process of requesting on-demand transit, making it easier for residents to utilize the service.

The expansion of Winnipeg Transit’s On-Request service demonstrates the city’s commitment to enhancing public transportation options and improving accessibility for residents. By adding a new zone in northwest Winnipeg and integrating the service into a new app, the city is taking steps to make transit services more convenient and efficient for residents in low-density neighbourhoods. The success of the service over the past three years has paved the way for its expansion and permanent status, benefiting more Winnipeggers and providing a valuable transportation option for those in need of accessible and reliable transit services. The continued development and expansion of the On-Request service align with the city’s broader goals of improving transit connectivity and accessibility for all residents.
