Dak Prescott, Cowboys QB, Discusses Possible Extension: ‘The Money is Out There’

Dak Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback, has yet to secure a new contract with the team. Despite reports suggesting an agreement will not be reached before the 2024 NFL season, Prescott is optimistic that a deal can be accomplished. He analogized his relationship with the Cowboys to his childhood experience of having two older brothers and learning about brotherhood. He suggested that, with the available resources, a satisfactory financial agreement for both parties could be achieved.

Prescott is in the last season of a four-year agreement worth $160 million. The trend for quarterbacks this offseason has seen contracts escalating dramatically, with players like Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love, Tua Tagovailoa, and Jared Goff all penning extensions averaging over $50 million per season.

Prescott’s performance last season was commendable; he achieved an NFL high of 36 passing touchdowns, 4,516 passing yards, a 105.9 passer rating, and completed 69.5% of his passes. He also attained personal bests in touchdown counts, passer ratings, and completion percentages. Despite his efforts, the Cowboys were eliminated in the NFC wild-card round and now hold a 2-5 playoff record with Prescott as the quarterback. Throughout his career, Prescott has been selected for the Pro Bowl three times and was the recipient of the 2022 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award.

Prescott is not alone in seeking or being eligible for an extension this offseason; other notable Cowboys players include star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and star linebacker Micah Parsons. Lamb, a three-time Pro Bowler who is currently holding out for a new deal, has consistently achieved over 1,100 receiving yards for the past three seasons. Parsons, a two-time All-Pro, has secured over 13 sacks each season and is now eligible for extension.

While the Cowboys have refrained from signing players to multi-year deals this offseason, they have welcomed back linebacker Eric Kendricks and running back Ezekiel Elliott. When it comes to negotiating his contract with Dallas, Prescott has expressed trust in his agent, Todd France, to strike a suitable deal.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract situation, Prescott remains relaxed about the outcome. While not particularly fixated on the final figure of his potential contract, he has expressed confidence in his agent’s ability to negotiate favorable terms. Also, he believes in the front office’s capabilities to manage the situation effectively and secure a deal that benefits both parties.
