The governor of Hawaii recently announced a $4 billion settlement to resolve lawsuits resulting from the wildfires that devastated Maui in 2023. This settlement is still subject to court approval but will see seven defendants paying a total of $4.037 billion to compensate approximately 2,200 affected parties who filed lawsuits related to the wildfires. The defendants in the settlement include the state of Hawaii, County of Maui, Hawaiian Electric, Kamehameha Schools, West Maui Land Co., Hawaiian Telcom, and Spectrum/Charter Communications.
Governor Josh Green stated that the settlement will aid in the healing process for those impacted by the wildfires on Maui. Hawaiian Electric’s president and CEO, Shelee Kimura, mentioned that the settlement followed four months of mediation and emphasized the importance of preventing such tragedies from occurring again in the future. Spectrum declined to comment on the settlement, and efforts to obtain statements from the other defendants were ongoing.
Attorneys for the plaintiffs, Jesse Creed and Jacob Lowenthal, explained that the settlement was the result of extensive negotiations that took into account the defendants’ liability and ability to pay. The focus was on compensating the victims who lost homes, businesses, and community structures in the wildfires. They also mentioned ongoing battles with insurance companies to ensure that victims are fully compensated, highlighting the importance of helping the affected community rebuild and heal.
The Hawaiian wildfires that occurred in August of last year burned over 2,000 acres in Lahaina and hundreds of acres in Kula and Olinda on Maui.
