Winkler, Manitoba is facing an abundance of mosquitoes that could potentially carry the West Nile virus, prompting the province to take action by issuing a ministerial order under the Environment Act. The order allows for the spraying of adult culex tarsalis mosquitoes in the area, using DeltaGard as the fogging agent. The spraying is set to begin on Thursday night and will cover a three-kilometre zone around Winkler, including the nearby villages of Reinfeld, Schanzenfeld, and Chortitz.

Residents of Winkler are being advised to stay indoors and close their doors and windows during the spraying to minimize exposure to the fogging agent. Despite the high mosquito population, no human cases of West Nile Virus have been confirmed in Manitoba so far this year. The province’s proactive approach to controlling the mosquito population and reducing the risk of West Nile virus transmission reflects their commitment to public health and safety.

The decision to fog Winkler and its surrounding areas comes as a preventative measure to reduce the potential transmission of West Nile virus, which is carried by mosquitoes. By targeting adult culex tarsalis mosquitoes, which are known carriers of the virus, the province aims to curb the mosquito population and protect residents from potential infection. The three-kilometre zone around Winkler was selected for fogging to ensure comprehensive coverage of areas at higher risk of mosquito activity.

The use of DeltaGard as the fogging agent for the mosquito control measures in Winkler has been approved by the province and is considered safe for use in residential areas. While the spraying may cause temporary inconvenience for residents, the benefits of reducing the mosquito population and lowering the risk of West Nile virus transmission outweigh the potential drawbacks. Taking a proactive approach to mosquito control is essential in protecting public health and preventing the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses.

Residents of Winkler are encouraged to take precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites, such as wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent, and removing standing water around their homes. These measures can help reduce the risk of mosquito bites and potential exposure to West Nile virus. The province’s efforts to control the mosquito population through fogging and other mosquito control measures demonstrate their commitment to ensuring the health and safety of residents in Manitoba.

As the fogging operations begin in Winkler and its surrounding areas, residents are reminded to follow the advice of health officials and stay indoors during the spraying to minimize exposure to the fogging agent. By working together to combat the mosquito population and reduce the risk of West Nile virus transmission, the province and residents of Winkler can create a safer and healthier environment for everyone. The proactive approach to mosquito control in Winkler serves as a model for other communities facing similar challenges and highlights the importance of taking preventative measures to protect public health.
