Olympic fever is at an all-time high as millions of viewers watch the 2024 Olympics in Paris, cheering on athletes from around the world who have worked tirelessly to compete on the prestigious international stage. Among the standout athletes are the women’s teams, who have captivated audiences with their incredible physical prowess and unwavering mental strength in the face of adversity. In particular, seven moments from the Olympics have showcased the athleticism and resilience of these extraordinary women.

One of the most inspiring stories from the games is that of Simone Biles, who made a triumphant return to the Olympics after facing challenges during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Despite suffering from “the twisties,” a condition that can cause serious mental and physical issues, Biles pushed through to earn a bronze medal and continued to dominate in Paris, leading the U.S. team to a gold medal in the all-around gymnastics final and becoming the most decorated U.S. Olympic gymnast in the process.

Suni Lee, Biles’ teammate, also captured hearts with her iconic comeback after battling serious health issues, including two chronic kidney diseases. Despite months of setbacks and uncertainty about her return to the sport, Lee persevered and went on to win gold in Tokyo. Her story is a testament to overcoming obstacles and inspiring others to pursue their dreams.

Nada Hafez, a fencer representing Egypt, made waves by competing in the Olympics while seven months pregnant. Despite facing criticism for her decision to participate in the games, Hafez showcased her exceptional athleticism and resilience, proving that pregnancy does not have to be a barrier to pursuing one’s goals.

Tina Rahimi, the first Muslim boxer on the Australian women’s team, used her platform to speak out against France’s hijab ban, which prevented athletes from wearing headscarves during the Olympics. Rahimi’s advocacy highlighted the importance of inclusivity and diversity in sports and called attention to discrimination faced by athletes of different backgrounds.

Coco Gauff, a rising star in women’s tennis, faced a controversial umpire call during her match at the Olympics, leading to a disappointing loss. Despite the setback, Gauff’s continued self-advocacy and resilience in the face of adversity serve as an inspiration to young athletes everywhere.

Finally, Zeng Zhiying’s journey to the Olympics at the age of 58 is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination. After a decades-long hiatus from the sport, Zeng returned to table tennis during the COVID-19 pandemic and qualified for the Olympics as part of Chile’s team. Her story is a reminder that dreams can be realized at any age and that setbacks should never deter one from pursuing their passions.
