Ukrainian fencer wins Ukraine’s first medal at Paris Olympics after refusing to shake hands with Russian opponent

Ukraine’s first medal of the 2024 Olympics was won by women’s fencer Olga Kharlan, who dedicated her bronze medal to her country amid its ongoing war with Russia. Kharlan beat South Korea’s Choi Sebin in a comeback victory, stating that the medal was a good start for all Ukrainian athletes competing during a challenging time. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which began in 2022, has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of athletes, making it difficult for Ukraine to send a full contingent to the Olympics. A display in London honored the 487 Ukrainian athletes killed since the invasion, highlighting the impact of the war on the sporting community.

Kharlan’s journey to the Paris Olympics was nearly derailed when she was disqualified from the 2023 World Fencing Championships for refusing to shake hands with a Russian opponent she had defeated. This put her Olympic aspirations in jeopardy, as the World Championships are a key qualifier for the Olympics. However, the International Olympic Committee granted her a “unique exception” to compete in Paris, rescinding the disqualification and two-month ban, and even making handshakes optional after bouts. These rulings allowed Kharlan to represent Ukraine and earn her nation’s first Olympic medal since the Russian invasion.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Kharlan expressed that she wouldn’t change anything about her journey, as it represents her country and what it is going through. She is proud to have won a medal for Ukraine and contributed to its Olympic success. In contrast, Russia will not be earning any Olympic medals in Paris due to the invasion of Ukraine violating the Olympic truce resolution. Russian athletes are not allowed to compete under their nation’s flag, but can participate as “Individual Neutral Athletes.”

The impact of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia is felt deeply in the world of sports, with athletes from both nations facing challenges and uncertainties. Kharlan’s bronze medal victory symbolizes resilience and determination in the face of adversity, inspiring other Ukrainian athletes to continue competing despite the difficult circumstances. The international community has shown support for Ukraine and its athletes, recognizing the sacrifices and hardships they have endured due to the war. The dedication and resolve of athletes like Kharlan highlight the power of sport to unite and uplift individuals and nations during times of crisis.
