Incorporating Culture into Retail: The Dior Approach

Dior’s Miss Dior Fragrance Inspires Monumental Silk Room Exhibition at Château de Versailles
A stunning 350 square meter embroidery entitled Chambre de Soie (The Silk Room) is currently on display at Paris’ Château de Versailles, sponsored by Christian Dior Parfums. This impressive installation, hand-embroidered by Mumbai’s Chanakya Workshops and School of Craft, is based on drawings by multi-disciplinary artist Eva Jospin. Jospin collaborated with Dior to create this masterpiece, inspired by the essence of the brand’s iconic Miss Dior fragrance.

Chanakya Workshops is a frequent collaborator with Dior, helping Indian women learn traditional artisan techniques through projects like the reimagined mosaics of athletes for Dior’s couture show in June. The Silk Room project began three years ago for Dior’s Fall ’21 haute couture show at Paris’ Musée Rodin, commissioned by Maria Grazia Chiuri, the womenswear artistic director. Jospin has added two additional panels for the Versailles exhibition, inspired by the Château’s groves of Lancelot and the Labyrinth.

In addition to the mesmerizing Silk Room exhibition at Versailles, Jospin also designed a limited edition 150-piece run of embroidered mini trunks to house special editions of the Miss Dior fragrance. The trunks and bows feature delicate botanical designs crafted by Chanakya Workshops, capturing the essence of a fresh garden with light and soft notes of mandarin, jasmine, berries, and woody scents. Jospin’s collaboration with Dior provided her with the resources to dream and create a stunningly intricate work of art.

Despite her extensive global exhibitions, collaborating with Dior still presented a significant opportunity for Jospin. She was pleasantly surprised by the level of creative freedom she was given by the brand, allowing her to truly express her vision through the Chambre de Soie project. Alongside the Versailles exhibition, visitors can also explore Jospin’s new exhibition, Tromper l’oeil, at Paris’ Galleria Continua, showcasing previously unseen works inspired by nature and architecture.

The Chambre de Soie exhibition at Château de Versailles will run until September 29th, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in a world of enchanting embroidery and botanical designs. Meanwhile, Tromper l’œil at Galerie Continua will be open through September 14th, giving art enthusiasts the opportunity to experience the full range of Jospin’s oeuvre, from mythical forests to three-dimensional cardboard sculptures. This collaboration between Dior and Jospin highlights the beauty of art and fashion coming together to create a unique and captivating experience for audiences to enjoy.
