Average TikTok users embrace their ‘natural beauty’: ‘I appreciate not being objectified by men’

Women who do not fit traditional beauty standards are starting to celebrate what they call “ugly privilege” online. These women feel that they are less likely to be objectified by men and feel safer and more comfortable in their own skin because of it. They feel that men do not find them attractive, and therefore, they are left alone, which they see as a privilege. This concept of “ugly privilege” is in stark contrast to the idea of “pretty privilege” where women who are conventionally attractive may face objectification and unwanted attention.

Many women have shared their experiences of feeling more comfortable after gaining weight and no longer receiving unwanted attention from men. They have expressed feeling unmotivated to lose weight because they have enjoyed the lack of harassment they have experienced. This rejection of societal beauty standards has allowed them to feel confident and empowered in their own skin, without the pressures of constantly having to meet unrealistic beauty expectations.

In the workplace, there are also potential advantages to having “ugly privilege.” Women who do not fit traditional beauty standards may be less likely to face biases and interruptions from others in the workplace. This can allow them to focus more on their jobs and be more productive, potentially leading to more recognition and opportunities for advancement. Women are often judged more harshly based on their appearance compared to men, which can impact their ability to secure certain roles or opportunities.

There have been instances where individuals have faced discrimination or biases based on their appearance, such as having visible tattoos, not wearing makeup, or dying their hair. Some women have shared stories of being overlooked for roles because they did not meet certain beauty standards. However, there are also instances where not meeting these societal expectations of beauty can be seen as an advantage, allowing individuals to focus on their work and relationships without distractions or biases.

The idea of “ugly privilege” challenges traditional beauty norms and highlights the different experiences women have based on their appearance. It showcases the complexities of how beauty standards can impact women in various aspects of their lives, from personal interactions to professional opportunities. Embracing one’s unique appearance and rejecting societal pressures to conform to certain standards can lead to empowerment and a sense of liberation from the constraints of traditional beauty ideals.

Ultimately, the concept of “ugly privilege” provides a new perspective on beauty and challenges the idea that only conventionally attractive individuals are valued. It highlights the importance of self-acceptance and celebrating individuality, regardless of how one may or may not fit into traditional beauty standards. By shifting the focus away from external appearances and towards personal qualities and abilities, women are able to redefine beauty on their own terms and embrace their own unique identities.
