Donald Tusk, Polish leader, urges European nations to invest in defense, warning of ‘prewar era’

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has urged European nations to increase investment in defense, warning that war is no longer a concept of the past and Europe is not ready for the current situation. Tusk’s remarks come as Russia intensifies airstrikes against Ukraine, with Russian missiles breaching Polish airspace during an attack on Ukraine, prompting Warsaw to heighten its military readiness. Moscow has further escalated its attacks by launching multiple missile barrages on Kyiv and targeting energy infrastructure in Ukraine in retaliation for Ukrainian aerial attacks on the Russian border region of Belgorod.

In a recent incident reported by Italian news agency AGI, Italian fighter jets at a Polish military base intercepted two Russian spy aircraft in the Baltic Sea that were not authorized to be in NATO airspace. While the Russian planes did not have hostile intentions and no harm was caused, the incident highlights the increasing tensions in the region. Tusk has called for more cooperation between Poland, Germany, and France to support Ukraine in defending itself and described the current situation as the most critical since the end of World War II, urging Europe to mentally prepare for a new era that he refers to as the “prewar era.”

Tusk has also criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for attempting to link a terrorist attack on Moscow’s Crocus City Hall to Ukraine without evidence, suggesting that Putin is justifying Russia’s violent attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine through baseless accusations. With Europe facing the threat of war and increasing aggression from Russia, Tusk stressed the need for urgent assistance for Ukraine and stronger cooperation among European nations to address the escalating crisis. The recent developments, including Russian planes breaching NATO airspace and heightened military readiness in Poland, indicate a growing risk of military conflict in the region.

As tensions rise and Russia continues its aggressive actions against Ukraine, European leaders like Tusk are sounding the alarm about the potential for a full-scale war in Europe. The recent incidents involving Russian airstrikes, missile barrages, and airspace violations highlight the volatile situation in the region. With calls for increased defense spending, more support for Ukraine, and closer cooperation among European nations, leaders are working to prevent a further deterioration of the crisis. The need to prepare for a new era of heightened conflict and potential warfare is becoming increasingly urgent as the security situation in Europe remains precarious. In the face of these challenges, leadership, unity, and decisive action will be crucial in averting a major conflict and preserving peace on the continent.
