At least 157 people were tragically killed in mudslides in a remote part of Ethiopia that had experienced heavy rainfall. The death toll rose from 55 to 157 as search operations continued in the Kencho Shacha Gozdi district of southern Ethiopia. Young children and pregnant women were among the victims of the mudslides, many of whom perished while attempting to rescue survivors of an earlier mudslide. At least five people were rescued alive from the mud.

The fundraising efforts for conflict-hit Ethiopia have garnered $630 million, just over half of the $1 billion goal. This devastation comes as the country is already facing numerous challenges, including ongoing conflict. The region where the mudslides occurred is in the Gofa Zone, and officials are continuing to search for missing individuals. Many people remain unaccounted for, and heartbreaking scenes of children hugging corpses have been reported as families have been completely wiped out by the tragic events.

Officials in the Gofa Zone have been working tirelessly to locate missing individuals and provide support to those affected by the mudslides. The area has been hit by heavy rainfall, leading to dangerous conditions and landslides. The rainy season in Ethiopia began in July and is expected to last until mid-September, further complicating recovery efforts. The region faces ongoing challenges as it works to recover from this devastating event.

The death toll from the mudslides has continued to rise, highlighting the urgent need for support and resources. Rescue workers are faced with difficult terrain as they search for survivors and recover bodies. The community has been devastated by the loss of life, with many families losing multiple loved ones in the tragic events. The impact of the mudslides will be felt for a long time to come, as the region works to recover and rebuild from the devastation.

The tragic events in Ethiopia serve as a reminder of the dangers faced by communities during the rainy season. Landslides are a common occurrence in the region, and efforts are ongoing to mitigate the impact of such events. The local authorities continue to search for missing individuals and provide support to those affected by the mudslides. The fundraising efforts for conflict-hit Ethiopia will play a critical role in providing assistance to those impacted by this devastating event.

As Ethiopia continues to recover from the mudslides, the international community has an opportunity to come together and support those in need. The fundraising efforts have already made significant progress, but more support is needed to help rebuild the affected communities. The country faces numerous challenges, and the devastating mudslides have only added to the difficulties faced by the people of Ethiopia. Through continued cooperation and assistance, there is hope for a brighter future for those affected by this tragedy.
