The unsettling reality of what is actually in your child’s chicken nuggets

Crumbed chicken is a favorite food among children, but many options found in supermarkets may not be as healthy as they seem, with some containing as little as 30% chicken. Pre-crumbed chicken is not as healthy as homemade options made with wholegrain bread crumbs, egg, and flour, but busy parents may not have the time to make it from scratch.

When selecting crumbed chicken from the supermarket, it is important to check the percentage of chicken in the product. Popular supermarket brands marketed as child-friendly meals may contain as little as 30% chicken, which is concerning given the price of these products. It is recommended to choose products with at least 50% chicken, but there are options available with up to 70% chicken, which offer higher protein content and better nutrition overall.

In addition to the percentage of chicken, it is important to consider the other ingredients in crumbed chicken products. Commercially crumbed chicken often contains processed ingredients such as flavors, salts, colors, and preservatives. One common preservative found in these products is sodium metabisulfite, which has been associated with respiratory side effects and gastric irritation in some individuals.

While crumbed chicken from the supermarket may not be the healthiest option, it is a convenient choice for busy families with picky eaters. Increasing the chicken content in these products and choosing options with fewer processed ingredients can help improve their nutritional value. Additionally, parents can make their own crumbed chicken at home using healthier ingredients to ensure their children are getting a nutritious meal.

In conclusion, while crumbed chicken is a popular choice for children, it is essential for parents to be aware of the ingredients in supermarket options. Many pre-crumbed chicken products contain low percentages of chicken and a variety of processed ingredients, which may not be ideal for growing kids. Selecting products with higher chicken content, fewer additives, and making homemade versions when possible can help ensure that children are getting a healthier meal.
