Mark Vientos of the Mets attributes success to Carlos Beltran following two-homer game

Mark Vientos has been performing well for the Mets since being recalled from Triple-A in May. However, there was a slight dip in performance a week ago when he began chasing pitches. His manager, Carlos Mendoza, noted this and commended Vientos for quickly making adjustments to counter how opposing pitchers were adapting to him.

Following his recent home runs, Vientos credited former Mets player Carlos Beltran for his turnaround. Beltran, now a special assistant to the president of baseball operations, had been working with Vientos during the team’s recent trip to Chicago. Beltran advised Vientos to simplify his approach by focusing on hitting toward center and right-center field, allowing him to be more effective at the plate.

Vientos implemented Beltran’s advice during Tuesday’s game against the Yankees. He hit two home runs against Gerrit Cole, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, showcasing his ability to adjust and simplify his mindset at the plate. Vientos acknowledged that focusing on making solid contact and avoiding overthinking were key to his success in that game.

Vientos had initially lost the battle for the Mets’ starting third baseman position to Brett Baty and was playing in Triple-A before being recalled in May. Baty’s struggles against left-handed pitchers led to Vientos getting the opportunity to showcase his skills, particularly his success against lefties. This shift in the lineup has proven beneficial for the Mets, with Vientos providing a much-needed offensive spark.

Despite concerns about Vientos’ defensive capabilities at third base, his strong offensive contributions have been crucial for the Mets. The team’s season has seen a positive turnaround, with Vientos playing a significant role in their recent success. His ability to make quick adjustments and deliver in pressure situations, such as hitting home runs off elite pitchers like Cole, bodes well for the Mets as they continue their season.

Moving forward, Vientos will likely remain a key part of the Mets’ lineup, providing a valuable offensive threat. While there may still be areas for improvement, particularly in his defense, Vientos’ bat has been reliable and effective. With guidance from experienced players like Beltran and the support of his team, Vientos is poised to continue making an impact and contributing to the Mets’ success as the season progresses.
