Experiencing turbulence during a flight can be nervewracking, but it is a common occurrence caused by a variety of factors such as temperature changes and wind shear. While turbulence is unpredictable, there are ways to help yourself relax and stay safe during these bumpy moments. Making smart decisions during turbulence can help you avoid getting hurt and make the experience more manageable.

One common mistake people make during turbulence is standing up. Experts advise against standing as it makes you more vulnerable to falling and injuring yourself. If you are seated, keeping your hips and pelvis aligned with your knees can help you stay upright and avoid hitting your head on the seat in front of you. In severe turbulence, immediately sitting on the floor and holding onto an armrest is recommended to prevent being catapulted upward and hitting your head on the ceiling.

Another common mistake to avoid during turbulence is taking off your seatbelt. Keeping your seatbelt fastened at all times, even when the seatbelt sign is off, is crucial to prevent injuries in the event of unexpected turbulence. Turbulence-related injuries often occur when passengers are not properly restrained in their seats. Rushing out of the bathroom when turbulence hits is also not advisable; it is safer to stay in the restroom, finish your business, and wait until the turbulence subsides before returning to your seat.

Opening overhead bins during turbulence can be dangerous, as heavy bags can fall and cause injuries. It is important to secure loose objects and store them away when not in use to prevent them from flying around during turbulence. Keeping your tray table up during turbulence is also essential to avoid injuries. Closing the tray table can prevent your face, chest, or abdomen from slamming into it, which could lead to injuries. Additionally, avoiding napping on the tray table to prevent your head from sliding into the seat in front of you is recommended.

During turbulent moments, try to remain calm and avoid panicking. Despite the scary stories in the news, commercial aviation has reached a significantly safe era with various tools to forecast and identify turbulence. Staying seated, wearing your seatbelt, and following safety recommendations can help you stay safe during turbulence. Choosing a seat near the center of the plane and taking precautions can also help make the experience more manageable. By making smart decisions and staying calm, you can navigate turbulence safely and minimize the risk of injuries.
