One of The Needling’s stories about Mount Rainier not erupting during one’s lifetime appeared in Google’s new AI Overview section, leading to confusion about the credibility of the information.
Alexa Vaughn, a former Seattle Times reporter and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who founded The Needling, expressed concern over the situation. She highlighted how the AI technology was unable to differentiate between real news and satire, leading to inaccurate results appearing in search queries. Google acknowledged the issue and made several technical improvements to address nonsensical queries and limit the inclusion of satire and humor content in AI Overviews.
