Netanyahu accuses Biden of withholding weapons, but US officials claim there is more to the story

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the United States of withholding weapons, which he claimed was hindering Israel’s offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. President Joe Biden has delayed delivering heavy bombs since May due to concerns about civilian casualties in Gaza. Netanyahu criticized Biden in a video, demanding the tools to finish the job faster. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken clarified that only the shipment of heavy bombs from May was under review, while other arms transfers were proceeding as normal. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that discussions with Israel were ongoing regarding the delayed shipment of heavy bombs.

Despite Netanyahu’s claims, experts believe there are no on-the-ground shortages of weapons in Israel. They suggest that Netanyahu’s message in English is aimed at ensuring continued U.S. arms support and may be part of a strategy to prevent future delays in arms shipments. The Israeli government is working to set the agenda for Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s upcoming meetings in the U.S. while also positioning Netanyahu as the one responsible for releasing the shipment of bombs. Netanyahu’s decision to disband his war Cabinet consolidates his control over the conflict and indicates a reluctance to seek a cease-fire, which critics attribute to his political motives.

Israel’s military campaign against Hamas in Gaza has resulted in a high number of casualties, with over 37,100 people killed according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The ongoing conflict has severely restricted access to essential supplies for Palestinians, leading to a humanitarian crisis in the region. Cease-fire talks have failed to yield a resolution between Hamas and Israeli leaders, with both sides hesitating to endorse a U.S.-backed plan that could pave the way for peace. Netanyahu remains committed to destroying Hamas’ capabilities, despite the growing international criticism over civilian deaths and the escalating humanitarian situation in Gaza.
