Three fish were recently certified as state fishing records by the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF). A yellowmouth grouper caught by Christopher Hyche weighed 23 pounds and was just short of a world record. White grunt caught by Joshua Pendleton weighed 5 pounds, 3.2 ounces, and an almaco jack caught by Roberto Cancel III weighed 33 pounds, 12.16 ounces. The DMF considers these catches exceptional and highlights North Carolina as a great fishing destination.
The yellowmouth grouper typically weighs up to 20 pounds and has yellow coloring on the inside and corners of its mouth. Hyche’s catch only missed the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) recognized world record by 3 ounces. Pendleton’s white grunt was a personal best and took him only a few minutes to reel in. White grunts are known for their light bluish-gray bodies and can make a grunting noise by grinding pharyngeal teeth together.
The state records set by these anglers showcase the phenomenal fishing opportunities along the North Carolina coast, with several world record fish being landed in the state.
