Ralph Conte, a centenarian and World War II veteran from South Carolina, has always had a passion for photography. He was drafted into the United States Army at the age of 21 and served in the 94th Infantry, Division 301st Infantry, Company F. Throughout the war, he served in nine different countries, including England, France, Germany, and Austria. Despite being injured by shrapnel and receiving a Purple Heart medal, Conte does not consider himself a hero. After being honorably discharged in 1948, he began his photography career and opened his own studio, “Conte Studios,” in New Jersey. He continues to take photographs at the age of 103, with a special interest in capturing the beauty of the Biltmore in North Carolina.
Conte’s granddaughter, Jessica Graf, explains that photography has always been a passion for her grandfather. She recalls a time when she shared a photo with Conte, and his response humorously indicated that her device was not up to his standard of technology. Despite his advanced age, Conte is tech-savvy, using social media, editing his own photos, and even wearing an Apple Watch. He also maintains a deep faith in God and continues to pray daily. After losing his wife, Veronica, in 2007, Conte remains dedicated to his family, including five children, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, with another on the way. Catholicism was an integral part of their upbringing, with faith and values instilled in each generation.
Graf shares that her grandfather’s strong faith, positive attitude, and zest for life inspire her daily. Conte’s motto to keep moving, live in the moment, and not worry about the things out of our control resonates with those around him. At the age of 103, he is still actively taking photographs of the Carolinas for his enjoyment and sells classic freelance pictures. Despite his advanced age, Conte remains an active and engaged member of his community, using his photography skills to capture the beauty of his surroundings.
