KPMG and T-Mobile Launch New Player-Tracking App for Women’s PGA Championship

T-Mobile is enhancing the fan experience at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship by providing infrastructure for the “KPMG Champcast” app which allows fans to track player shots in real-time. The app features high-resolution drone imagery of each hole at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash., and shot-tracking is powered by ShotLink technology. Fans can access Champcast through the championship’s mobile app or online. This technology represents a significant advancement in tracking tech in golf since the introduction of ShotLink by the PGA Tour more than 20 years ago, leading to the development of new statistics such as strokes gained.

KPMG also launched the KPMG Performance Insights dashboard in 2021, providing advanced analytics such as strokes gained for LPGA golfers. This tracking technology has had a broader impact beyond the golf course, driving the adoption of entertainment experiences at businesses like Topgolf and Five Iron Golf in Seattle. The PGA Tour itself works with Amazon Web Services to power ShotLink technology, further highlighting the integration of tech in the world of golf. T-Mobile’s 5G technology is being promoted at the tournament, providing additional camera angles for NBC’s television coverage and connectivity enhancements for event operations at Sahalee.

In addition to providing technology for the tournament, T-Mobile is hosting a lounge at the event for fans with an augmented reality experience. The wireless carrier recently signed a four-year sponsorship deal with the PGA of America, demonstrating its commitment to sports-related partnerships to showcase its products and services. Notable female golfers, including top-ranked Nelly Korda and previous Women’s PGA Championship winner Brooke Henderson, are sponsored by T-Mobile. The company’s involvement in major golf events like the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and the PGA Championship last month further solidify its presence in the sports industry.

Overall, the integration of technology in golf, such as ShotLink and the KPMG Champcast app, has revolutionized the game by providing real-time shot tracking and advanced analytics. This has not only enhanced the on-course experience for fans but has also led to the development of new statistics and fueled the creation of entertainment experiences off the course. T-Mobile’s involvement in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship through its technology infrastructure and sponsorship deals underscores the growing partnership between tech companies and sports, paving the way for a more interactive and engaging fan experience in golf and other sports.
