New Federal Investigation Launched Following Boeing MAX Plane’s Close Call

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating a harrowing incident involving a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 that nearly plummeted into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii in April. Southwest Flight 2786 encountered adverse weather conditions near Kauai, leading to a rapid descent towards the ocean. The pilots managed to regain control and safely return to Honolulu, narrowly avoiding a disaster. The aircraft came within 400 feet of the ocean’s surface and plunged at a rate exceeding 4,000 feet per minute before the pilots were able to pull up.

Southwest Airlines addressed the incident in a statement, emphasizing its commitment to safety through its Safety Management System. This incident comes on the heels of another episode involving a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8, where an unusual rolling motion was experienced during a flight from Phoenix to Oakland. The FAA, Boeing, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident, with Southwest pledging its cooperation. The plane entered a “Dutch roll” while cruising at approximately 34,000 feet, a phenomenon that pilots are trained to recover from.

The Boeing 737 Max series has been under intense scrutiny following two devastating crashes in 2018 and 2019 that claimed a total of 346 lives. These tragedies were attributed to a flawed automated flight control system, leading to a global grounding of the aircraft. After extensive investigations, software updates, and enhanced pilot training, the FAA cleared the 737 Max to return to service in November 2020. As investigations into the recent Southwest Airlines incidents progress, the aviation industry and the public are awaiting further insights into the causes and any necessary steps to prevent future occurrences.

The FAA, in collaboration with Boeing and the NTSB, is thoroughly investigating both incidents involving Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. The agency is looking into the rapid descent towards the ocean off the coast of Hawaii, as well as the unusual rolling motion experienced during the flight from Phoenix to Oakland. Southwest Airlines has expressed its commitment to safety and cooperation with the investigations. The flight crew’s ability to regain control and safely land the aircraft in both instances demonstrates the importance of rigorous training and adherence to safety protocols in the aviation industry.

The aviation industry and the public are closely monitoring the investigations into these Southwest Airlines incidents, which come after the worldwide grounding of the Boeing 737 Max series following the fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019. The safety of passengers and crew members remains a top priority for airlines like Southwest, and the incidents highlight the need for continued diligence in ensuring the airworthiness of aircraft and the competency of pilots. As more information is revealed through the investigations, any necessary corrective actions will likely be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future and uphold the highest standards of safety in aviation.
