Trading Deadline is Centered Around Yankees’ $31 Million Duo

The New York Yankees have surged to an MLB-leading 46 wins, positioning themselves as buyers as the trade deadline approaches. Fangraphs data shows that their chances of making the playoffs have soared to 99.7% with a 15% chance of winning the World Series, largely due to their starting rotation exceeding expectations and a strong start by MVP candidate Juan Soto. However, with infielders Anthony Rizzo and Gleyber Torres underperforming, the team is looking to improve its roster.

Rizzo, who is earning $17 million this season with a club option for 2025, has been struggling at first base, prompting a move to the bench. The Yankees are unlikely to retain him for another season at that cost, especially with Soto expected to command a big contract in free agency. The team’s principal owner, Hal Steinbrenner, has expressed interest in keeping Soto long-term but also highlighted the team’s current payroll as unsustainable, indicating potential changes in the future roster.

Likewise, Torres, who is on a one-year deal earning $14.2 million before entering free agency, has been performing below expectations. The team has been exploring infield flexibility, with Cabrera and Berti stepping up in different positions. LeMahieu, who is struggling at the plate, might see a permanent move to first base to salvage his productivity. The Yankees are looking for value at first, second, or third base to ensure productivity on the field while freeing up payroll for other needs.

The Yankees have been strong in pitching and outfield play, with top prospect Jasson Domínguez unlikely to be called up unless there are injuries. This allows the team to focus on targeting infield improvements as the trade deadline approaches. The potential departure of Rizzo and Torres opens up opportunities for new signings or trades to bolster the team’s infield and maintain their competitive edge in the postseason and beyond.

With the Yankees leading in ERA on the mound and a stellar outfield, the team’s focus on improving the infield signals their intention to build a well-rounded roster for sustained success. The need to replace Rizzo and Torres adds urgency to their trade deadline plans, as the team looks to secure additional talent to push them over the top in the playoffs. As they navigate the upcoming midseason moves, the Yankees are poised to make strategic decisions that could shape the future of the team for years to come.
