A home in South Okanagan was completely destroyed in an overnight fire, with two people being hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The Penticton Fire Department received a call about smoke and flames coming from the home along Rigsby Street at 2 a.m. Fire Chief Mike Larsson stated that the house was fully involved when crews arrived, requiring 23 firefighters to extinguish the flames. The home’s three residents were able to escape, but two were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

A neighbour who saw smoke coming from the home called 911 as the fire quickly developed. Witnesses reported seeing large flames and plumes of smoke from across the downtown core. Although the tenants made it out in time, they were covered in soot. Two of them were treated for smoke inhalation but have since been released. Unfortunately, their pets did not survive. Chief Larsson praised the firefighters for their efforts in controlling the fire and preventing it from spreading to nearby houses, despite the challenging circumstances.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and an investigation is underway. The property manager stated that an older couple had been living in the house for the past 20 years and were considered to be good tenants. The management is working to find them a new place to live. The tenants are currently receiving support from Emergency Support Services. Rick Allercott, the property manager, expressed his sadness over the loss of the home and the impact on the tenants, whom he described as excellent.

The fire was described as stubborn, with firefighters on the scene until 8 a.m. The main source of the flames was the home itself, although some surrounding bushes and a neighboring house suffered minor damage. Despite the efforts to contain the fire, the home was ultimately deemed a total loss. The property manager expressed hope for the well-being of the tenants and regret over the unfortunate situation. The community rallied to support the affected residents, demonstrating solidarity in the face of adversity.

Global News reported on the fire and its aftermath, highlighting the efforts of the firefighters, the impact on the tenants, and the investigation into the cause of the blaze. The story resonated with readers, drawing attention to the importance of fire safety and preparedness in residential areas. The loss of the home and the pets inside served as a reminder of the devastating consequences of fires and the need for vigilance in preventing such incidents. The community’s response to the tragedy showcased compassion and support for the affected individuals, emphasizing the importance of coming together in times of crisis.
